My PHILOSOPHY of Serving:
We must keep in mind what a City Council person is supposed to do: A City Council person is supposed to look out for the best interests of their city and its constituents, NOT for the best interests of developers, bond investors, or consultants. From my perspective, this means, we must consider: PEOPLE: 1. Prioritize local businesses over out-of-state corporations. 2. Transform Old Town Westminster into a thriving Business District, rather than designating it as "Blighted". 3. Respect the rights of apartment dwellers as much as home-owners. 4. Respect LGBTQ folks as well as straight people who choose not to have kids. 5. Respect families with children and give them the resources to work with. 6. Promote shared housing that accommodates multi-generational needs as well as people with different financial & care requirements. 7. Respect the rights of older people to live in their own homes, while not labeling them with "dementia" or something else, just to get to their assets.
Nature:
1. Make Westminster a "Dark Sky City" ... plant pollinator trees, flowers and shrubs ... and protect native and migrating birds.
2. Ban the sale and use of pesticides and herbicides in Westminster. This stuff kills creatures up and down the food chain and pollutes our water supply.
3. Reduce animal suffering, and reduce the spread of deadly virus & zoonotic diseases. School meals must include Plant-Based options.
4. Consider wildlife and their habitat ... A beautiful and sustainable community is about MORE than humans, housing and highways.
Climate-Change Resiliency:
1. Promote a well-desinged and holistic water management system that uses nature, as well as innovative human technology, to create clean drinking water. This holistic water system will also re-use water to irrigate our urban trees and landscapes, which will in turn, cool our planet and absorb greenhouse gases.
2. Require Net-Zero energy strategies like solar panels, geothermal, heatpumps, etc. WITHIN new architecture, while retrofitting existing structures ... and use Federal IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) funding to do it!
3. Drive less, but walk & bike more. Implement Smart Transit and STOP justifying "Transit-Oriented Design" that has nothing to do with using public transit, a la Uplands! Start implementing local public transit throughout Westminster, instead of prioritizing bus & light rail trips to half-empty office buildings in Downtown Denver!
4. Keep our wild and open spaces intact. Allow property owners to exchange 5 acres (or more) of undeveloped land for one acre of land with utilities in places such as the "New Downtown". Or offer Land Conservation Easements to keep our special places really special, instead of becoming even more cluttered urban spaces.
5. Reduce impervious coverage like parking lots, roads, and other "heat islands" ... while exchanging them for more parks and Open Space.
6. Promote a "30 x 30 Strategy" when dealing with our public (and private) lands. This will give us more: Breathing room, Open space, Wildlife habitat and Climate-Change Resiliency!
